LLUBINKA BRKICH-BREYFOGLE, WINDOM SCHOOL DISTRICT - CO-CHAIR AAITE ETHICS AND STANDARDS COMMITTEE

I have been a Spanish FreelancerInterpreter/Translator for over 30 years. From my early years working as a Pharmacy Technician in California, getting called to the physicians’ office to help interpret for patients, to currently working for over ten years as a Bilingual Paraprofessional for the Windom School District in Minnesota; while still doing freelancing with hospitals and industries in the area. I am a founding member of AAITE (American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education) and served as Co-Chair for the Ethics & Standards Committee. I was awarded the“Friend of Education Award 2022” by the Windom School District for my dedication and advocacy for the Limited English Proficient students and community in Windom. My hobbies are many but all related to creativity such as Photography, Painting, String Art and yes, making arepas for breakfast as I am “Made in Venezuela”! I thrive to learn, a workaholic by nature that never gives up and lives by  "The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary."

 

 GIOVANNA CARRIERO-CONTRERAS, CESCO LINGUISTIC SERVICES - AAITE CHAIR-ELECT

For over 25 years, Giovanna has been a noteworthy leader in the language industry space. You may know her as the Founder and CEO at Cesco Linguistic Services, but Giovanna is also a verified international industry expert and a published language industry author, master TOT trainer, and speaker. She co-authored The Community Interpreter®, an interpreting training program of 40+ hours for community interpreters, and The Medical Interpreter program. She is a member of the ASTM Committee F43 on Language Services and Products, and Chief of US Delegation for the ISO/TC 37/SC 5 for translation, interpreting, and related technology standards. She is a member of several advocacy groups for the advancement of T&Is and is a founding member and Chair-Elect of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE). Giovanna was honored with the 2020 Bill Daniels Ethical Leader of the Year Award for her unwavering commitment to principle-based ethics in business despite and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic to promote language access for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals. She speaks English, Italian, French and Spanish.

 

 

LUIS F. HERNÁNDEZ, RIVERSIDE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION - AAITE CHAIR

Luis F. Hernández is a Spanish and English interpreter, translator, language access advocate, and Translation Services Supervisor for the Riverside County Office of Education in Riverside, California. He holds a BA in Translation & Interpretation Studies, a BA in Spanish with Emphasis in Translation from California State University, Long Beach, and an MA in Bilingual Interpreting from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. He is also a Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (Spanish) certificant through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), and a founding member of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE). He has extensive experience working as a staff medical interpreter and translator, court interpreter, and as an educational interpreter and translator in several states throughout the U.S.

 

MIAO (MAGGIE) HONG, FREELANCE INTERPRETER AND TRANSLATOR, LECTURER 

Miao (Maggie) Hong is a professional conference Interpreter, federal court professionally qualified mandarin interpreter, state court certified Mandarin interpreter (IL and WI), National Board of Certification for medical interpreters (NBCMI) certified Mandarin medical interpreter, and published translator. She earned her MACI degree from MIIS in 2011, and is currently a freelance interpreter based in Chicago, providing interpreting and translation services both in conference and community settings. Maggie is also working as adjunct faculty teaching at MIIS this semester. As an advocate for the profession, she is a frequent presenter at conferences and volunteers frequently for professional associations.

 

DR. JENNIFER LOVE, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dr. Jennifer Love has dedicated her career to education and engagement equity, elevating effective practices in language access and English learner family engagement. A graduate of Wake Forest University, she has served for 20 years as an educator and district leader and is also a nationally recognized author and language access advocate. Dr. Love is committed to bridging equitable engagement practices and developed a language access framework to support schools and districts in creating meaningful and sustainable language access programs.  

 

NICK MAGNOLIA, HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

BA in Linguistics from UMass Amherst where I also worked for the Translation Center. My working language is Spanish and I have lived and attended formal schooling in Paraguay and Ecuador. Out of college, I got my NBCMI and worked in a community hospital as a medical interpreter. At Holyoke Public Schools, I implemented a system for providing T&I services that included CAT tools and got to work with the Translation Center again to design and execute Holyoke's "Interpreter & Translator in Education Workshop Series''. I am a member of NETA and I am on the Job Task Analysis Committee of AAITE. Currently on track to earn my MA in Translation & Localization Management in May of 2023 from Middlebury Institute of International Studies. 

 

VERONICA NAVARRO, SANTA CLARA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Veronica Navarro is a  translator and interpreter for the Santa Clara Unified School District, She supervises 30 translation and interpreting staff members who facilitate communication between English Learning families and the SCUSD personnel. She provides leadership for the collaborative process between all staff and parents. She created the first Translation and Interpretation Handbook for the District, has created and implemented smooth workflow processes, a professional development plan and schedule for translators/ interpreters, and oversees the implementation of new department procedures and language services throughout the district. Twice a year, she provides professional development to all translation and interpretation staff on ethics, new practices, usage of SIRAS, remote interpretation tools and applications, and current translation tools and applications. Veronica obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Walden University. She also holds a Translation and Interpretation Certificate from Mexico City and a Paralegal Certificate from California State University, Monterey Bay.

 

 MIREYA PÉREZ, BRAND THE INTERPRETER PODCAST

Mireya Pérez began her professional interpreting career after completing her training at Riverside Community College in California. Soon thereafter, she became a certified medical interpreter working for both a general hospital and later a children's hospital.  She brought her experiences working both with children and their families to a K-12 school district as a district interpreter/translator where she has led efforts in the development of district-wide systems, procedures and staff training to help professionalize the role. She holds a Master’s of Science in Communications from Purdue University and in 2020 launched the Brand the Interpreter Podcast, a platform dedicated to sharing the stories of language professionals around the world.

 

HELENA SENATORE, SAN FRANCISCO UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL - AAITE BOARD SECRETARY

Helena has been immersed in educational settings for thirty years. After teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at the high school level and US History at the college level in her native Buenos Aires, her interest in American history and culture led her to the U.S., first as a Fulbright scholar at the Institute for the Study of the US at UC Santa Barbara, then as graduate student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she earned an MA. For the past 23 years, Helena has been teaching Spanish language and literature at San Francisco University High School, where she is also the Language Department Chair and the Language Access Coordinator. Her dual roles working with underserved families at the middle school and high school level led her to seek training in educational translation and interpreting. Helena found a  community and a sense of mission at the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE), where she has been the Job Task Analysis (JTA) Committee Secretary since its inception in the spring of 2020. Helena also currently serves as the AAITE Board Secretary.

 

 
CAROL SHAW, FREELANCE CERTIFIED TRANSLATOR AND INTERPRETER
Carol Shaw is an ATA-certified translator (Spanish>English) and a master licensed court interpreter (Texas). After working for a law firm for several years, she left her other home country of Ecuador and moved to the United States. Here, she worked in the corporate world for 16 years. In the summer of 2000,  she returned to her roots and became a full-time, freelance translator and interpreter.  Her practice focuses primarily on translation, but she also serves as a court and educational interpreter in the DFW area in Texas.  She has designed and taught seminars and workshops for court and educational interpreters since 2002.
DR. HOLLY SILVESTRI, NATIONAL CENTER FOR INTERPRETATION - CO-CHAIR AAITE ETHICS AND STANDARDS COMMITTEE
In addition to having significant experience in the field of secondary and university education, Dr. Silvestri has run her own LSP agency as well as freelancing for other agencies and government entities. A master community interpreter trainer, currently, she works as Senior Coordinator for Translation, Training, and Curriculum at the National Center for Interpretation at the University of Arizona. She has also taught in their undergraduate Spanish Translation and Interpretation program. Her working languages are Spanish, French and English. She is a founding member of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education, an organization dedicated to the professionalization of those who interpret/translate in school-based settings in the United States of America. She is currently co-chair of the Ethics and Standards Committee of AAITE where she is spearheading the creation of a national code of ethics and standards of practice for this interpreting specialization.
FABIO TORRES, TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION NETWORK

Fabio Torres received his BA in Religion in 1996 and MA in Church and Community Ministry in 2000. Fabio is a Core-Certified Medical Interpreter and Cross-cultural Trainer, he has worked as a professional interpreter in various capacities since 1989. He has supervised hundreds of interpreters and has developed, implemented, and taught interpreter training and continuing education courses. Fabio had the privilege to assist CCHI as a subject expert during the creation of the national medical certification and creation of interpreting and translation legislation at the state level, Finally, Fabio has served as a Director of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC), Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators (TAHIT), and the Metroplex Interpreters and Translators Association  (MITA).  

DR. RITA WEIL, RICARTI GROUP

Dr. Rita Weil is a professional medical and community interpreter and an experienced interpreter trainer. She is the owner of RICARTI Group, an online healthcare interpreter training program. She has 20 years of experience as a Spanish interpreter, working first in the Washington, DC area, and presently in Philadelphia, PA. Rita is a former Peace Corps volunteer having served in Colombia and as a Peace Corps Response volunteer in Honduras. She lived and worked in Venezuela for nine years. Rita Weil is a past chair of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters and a former member of the DVTA board (Delaware Valley Translators Association). She serves on the Ethics and Standards committee tasked to write the ethics and standards for interpreters in education for the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE). Rita has been a volunteer interpreter on three medical brigades to Latin America, serving in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Ecuador. Her advanced degrees include a Master’s in Education, Master’s in Adult Education, and a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Development.
